What is the principle of mobile phone wireless reverse charging and how to set it up?

What is reverse wireless charging?

In fact, the mobile phone reverse wireless charging function is not a new technology. It is only an application scenario of wireless charging. It is only the transplantation of the wireless charger function into the mobile phone. The user selects when to turn on or off the function in the mobile phone settings.  The wireless reverse charging of the mobile phone needs to be operated manually, not automatically.

Since Huawei launched the wireless reverse charging function of Huawei Mate 20 Pro at the 2018 Mate 20 press conference, the main flagship phones of major mobile phone manufacturers have begun to equip this function as standard.

reverse wireless charging

Wireless reverse charging refers to devices that could only receive electromagnetic waves for wireless charging, such as mobile phones, can now send electromagnetic waves through wireless coils to charge other devices that support wireless charging. In other words, this function is only the omnidirectional support of the wireless charging function, that is, it can not only receive electromagnetic waves, but also release electromagnetic waves.

Wireless charging technology originates from wireless power transmission technology, which can be divided into low-power wireless charging and high-power wireless charging. The wireless charging technology of mobile phones is low-power wireless charging, often using Qi (the "wireless charging" standard launched by the Wireless Charging Alliance), which is electromagnetic induction. Currently, the mobile phones that support reverse charging on the market mainly include Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro, Huawei P40 Pro, Samsung S10 series, Samsung S20 series and Xiaomi 10 series, etc.

reverse wireless charging

The wireless reverse charging of mobile phones, as a new feature in mobile phones, needs to be turned on manually. It does not mean that charging devices can be carried out by placing devices that support wireless charging next to the mobile phone. Generally, this function is located in the settings of the phone.

For example, Xiaomi's newly released xiaomi 10, if you want to activate the wireless reverse charging function, you need to slide down from the top of the screen and open the phone's control center. Then you can see the "Wireless Reverse Charging" option, click it to enable this feature. After putting a device that supports wireless charging that needs to be charged on the back of xiaomi 10, xiaomi 10 will automatically recognize and perform charging operations.

wireless charging

How fast is it?

These days, fast charging is good charging. Speed seems especially important for Huawei’s new use case, which is designed more for very quick little top ups than for docking and leaving your phone for an hour.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro can wirelessly charge at up to 15W, which is pretty fast. However, we don’t have the specifications for how quickly the Mate 20 Pro can charge up other devices. The Google Pixel 3 is limited to just 10W and that’s only when using “Made by Google” certified products. Otherwise, the Pixel 3 will default to the standard 5W Qi charging mode, which will therefore likely be the best case scenario when charging from the Mate 20 Pro.

At approximately 2.5W of wireless charging power, the Mate 20 Pro tops up other phones very slowly

We’re looking at something much closer to 2.5W when using reverse wireless charging from the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. That’s significantly slower than standard wireless charging, let alone wired charging. Although this feature sounds really neat, it probably isn’t going to be much help to phones on their last legs. Reverse wireless charging is just too slow to be useful for day-to-day charging, though it may still come in handy for those truly desperate situations when every last bit of juice helps.
